    5 levels of coaching

You are constantly asked to coach people in need – your friends, peers, employees and maybe clients.

How well you coach others impacts your relationships, health and even income.

Do you add value, which excites other people to take action? Or do you unintentionally take value, which causes people to withdraw? Do people you coach make rapid achievement, or do they get stuck?

In short, what type of coach are you?

I recently had the pleasure of participating in the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching’s Coaches Cup.

This was a request from  “Magnum” on how to deal with politics at work. In it, we discuss our beliefs about politics and learn the ABCDE model to political strategy. This improves our ability to navigate organizations and relationships, leads to better project success and frankly makes us much happier in the work environment.

(I also made a follow-up video on Favoritism based on questions about this video)

I refer to the books: The Art of War by Sun Tzu and Who Really Matters by Art Kleiner

“What exactly does a life coach do anyway?” I asked a well known coach at a party. Her answer was simple. “Most people are running from something. You have to be running towards something. You have to have a vision.”

While it may be obvious now, it was a profound statement about how I was choosing to live, or rather not live at the time. I was focusing my mind on what I didn’t want; the challenging parts of my job, the relationships that weren’t working and being out of shape. This kept me stuck.

“Are you sure you want to do this on your first open water dive?” my best friend asked prior to our trip.

“Of course,” I said. “I’ll be fine.”

I should have known something wasn’t right when I missed my own home airport exit twice before finally parking. I wasn’t fine.

I felt stressed out and wanted to get away from it all. I was looking forward to spending time with my best friend. I had just finished my diver training in a local quarry and the thought of catching lobsters in the open ocean sounded like an adventure.

  • What is a Blue Phoenix?

It represents someone who is not his or her best self. The blue is the part that is sad or frozen in some aspect of their life. The phoenix is our best self. When you first meet someone, you may see both. Our goal is to move them from a Blue Phoenix to a Phoenix. We start with standard coaching tools like strengths finding and visioning to do this.

However, it’s rarely that easy. When someone attempts this shift, their inner critic puts up obstacles to protect them from taking risks. The inner critic was formed when they attempted risks early in life and were hurt or criticized.
